What is creativity?

“Creativity is not something where someone who has never worked in that field before suddently gets the Marvelous Idea. Creativity is relating a concept to a particular body of knowledge. The existing body of knowledge is as important as the novel idea. And creative people spend years and years acquiring and refining their knowledge base: be it music, arts, sculptor or design”  Von Stamm(2003)

Therefore Creativity is Non Stop Work and through Associating, Questioning, Observing, Experimenting, and Networking it generates Innovation (INSEAD) or Maybe some Aesthetics.

SKETCHBOOK JOURNEYS : MY UNBOUND THEME

How many sketchbooks will I still keep – a madness of creating, holding a variety of images and anything that comes to mind.  Painting was the outlet from the rigid structure of elevations and plans in my profession, evolving to parallel themes of escapes – imagined landscapes and narrative facades.

The imagined landscapes are “escapes” for my viewer to find quietude, I chose imagined landscapes (as numerous artists already convey true nature at its best) to place the viewer and create a sense of place.

The narrative facades are “escapes” for the viewer’s possible emotions of various encounters, as one traverses in a colorful life, to explore and then leave behind again.  The facades are non-jarring and simple to view, painted from the onset to be non-intrusive; yet communicate – a witness or truth to a hidden part of one’s emotions, which words alone may not say.

Evolving to static inkwork storification of a girl with an umbrella and a boy with a balloon.

Artist Statement

Sketching, drawing, creating places and color are constant passions that fuel my everyday.
My process is organic, drawing while thinking generates a spontaneous manner that strives to capture a quick image in my mind.
The majority of my artwork contains a sense of place with layers of color gradation and strokes of the medium used to convey visual texture.

Shirley V. Ting is an emerging visual artist in Markham, Ontario grew up in Manila, Philippines and moved to Canada while undergraduating at University of Notre Dame, USA.  Work and studies have allowed her to live a number of months in Hongkong, Rome, and New York before settling in Toronto.

With an architectural background training of freehand sketches, architectural compositional plates, including diversified self taught knowledge of various mediums. Shirley views the fine art of painting as an avenue that allows a continuity of her passion in creating images and conveying them in a formal setting.

Majority of Shirley V. Ting’s work has an ‘East meets West’ essence that have delicate strokes and a presence of whimsy. Some themes are playful “narrative facades” – engaging the audience in thought and conveying observations, or which may stay as a quiet picture.
