Artist statement: Sketching, drawing, creating places and color are constant passions that fuel my everyday.  My process is organic, drawing while thinking generates a spontaneous manner that strives to capture a quick image in my mind.

The majority of my artwork contains a sense of place with layers of color gradation and strokes of the medium used to convey visual texture.   I use my architecture training to convey in art, as in architecture, a sense of movement that allows a person to subconsciously experience the space, an intention to orient/disorient, so too in my artwork I hope to move the viewer’s eyes within the canvas to experience its space.

Style: Majority of Shirley V. Ting’s works has an ‘East meets west’ essence, with delicate strokes and a presence of whimsy.  Some themes are playful “narrative facades” – engaging the audience in thought and conveying observations or may stay as a ‘quiet picture’.

BIO: At an early age, I had been interested in drawing, sketching ideas, and creations.  I chose to enter a field that allowed me to continue these activities, and also utilize my preference for math and physics.   Since then, there was a fascination for application of creation: from the mazes in my childhood, designing memory boards, and to jewelry during my free time from architecture.

My Architecture education had honed my sketching skills, as well as developed my analytical thinking.  Architecture opened new influences in my life, informing me about world.  Architecture history made me more conscious of psychological and sociological needs of people based on their sense of place, relaying how architecture over the centuries create cultural growth.  In my architecture pursuit I also learned about art, which over time allowed an alternate outlet for my call to create outside of the architecture office.  Things seemingly fell into place where my true leisure activity of creating from ideas I am able to apply in my real world profession and in my free time.
